St. Paul and the sinfully divided community at Corinth and Jesus confounding the Pharisees by healing on the Sabbath. What do they have in common? Love isn’t always warm fuzzies; sometimes it’s very demanding and seemingly harsh. Sometimes the Gospel challenges us to be faithful; to the reality of our call to follow Christ. St. Paul understood this, particularly when personal, individual choices have the consequence of dividing the community. Paul insists that the loving thing to do is often to challenge worldly ways (the “flesh”) so that the spirit may prevail. Jesus too presents us with the primacy of compassion and love, overcoming fear, and looking to the ultimate value of participating in the eternal reign of God.
